Master’s Thesis Defense on the Purification and Characterization of Arginase Enzyme from the Serum of Kidney Failure Patients

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed the master’s thesis entitled “Purification and Characterization of Arginase Enzyme from the Serum of Kidney Failure Patients” on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. The session was attended by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, the Head of the Department, and a number of esteemed faculty members.

The thesis, submitted by Jalal Amin Suleiman from the Department of Chemistry, aimed to investigate the following major aspects in patients with kidney failure:

  • Clinical Part:

    • Study of arginase enzyme activity in the serum of kidney failure patients.

    • Investigation of clinical and biochemical variables associated with kidney failure, including:

      • Levels of Endothelin-1, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D.

      • Assessment of liver and kidney function markers.

      • Measurement of antioxidants and oxidative stress.

      • Analysis of the correlation between arginase activity and the studied variables in kidney failure patients.

  • Technical Part:

    • Partial isolation and purification of arginase enzyme from patients’ serum using biotechnological methods.

    • Determination of its molecular weight.

    • Study of optimal conditions for enzyme activity.

    • Examination of the effect of mineral salts on arginase activity.

The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Dhekra Ali Aloush, with membership of Prof. Dr. Sameer Mushrif Khalaf and Asst. Prof. Dr. Saba Zaki Mahmoud, under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Zahraa Mohammed Ali Hammoudat.

On this occasion, the Dean of the College presented a letter of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Sameer Mushrif Khalaf from the University of Anbar, in recognition of his efforts and commitment in participating in the thesis defense despite the hardships of travel.
