Master thesis discusses the development of a gel sterilizer to improve the efficiency of Dettol

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Department of Chemistry at the College of Sciences discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” The effect of the presence of 4-chloro-5,3-dimethylphenol in the gelatinous state of worm-like micelles on their stability and efficiency in sterilization”, by student Sari Taha Jasim Mohammed.
The dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the dean’s assistants, the head of the department, and a number of college teachers and graduate students attended part of the discussion.
The dissertation dealt with the study of the effect of the presence of 4-chloro-5,3-dimethylphenol (commercially known as Dettol) in the gel mode of worm-like micelles, formed from a mixture of surfactants, on their stability and efficiency in sterilization.
The study aimed to develop a gel sterile solution containing Dettol and worm-like micelles, to achieve :
- Increased aseptic effectiveness.
- Improve the stability of gel micelles.
- The cleaning property is added Thanks to the presence of surfactants.
The results showed the possibility of forming the gel system not only from the triple system (two types of surfactants with the basic active substance SDS and CTAB), but also from the binary system in an exceptional way using only the basic active substance with CTAB. The study recommended the production of the sterilizer in the form of an effective and biologically stable gel, with an improved cleaning property.
Sustainable Development Goals linked to the mission :
- Goal 3: good health and well-being : the development of a more effective and stable gel sterilizer contributes to the promotion of personal sterilization, hospitals and health facilities, reducing the spread of diseases and enhancing public health.
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and infrastructure : design and development of innovative products based on surfactants, supporting innovation in the manufacture of disinfectants and sanitary chemical products.
- Goal 12 : responsible consumption and production: improve the stability and effectiveness of the sterilizer reduces waste in chemical products and promotes the sustainable use of active substances in Sterilization Products.
The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ammar Abdul Sattar Ibrahim Yahya, and the membership of:
Prof. Assistant Dr. Alaa Mohammed Tayeb Hussein Mohammed
Prof. Dr. Rawia Zaghloul Saeed Ahmed
Under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Rabah Ali Khalil.
At the end of the discussion, the dean of the college, prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Prof. Dr. Rawya Zaghloul said Ahmed from the Polytechnic College – Northern Technical University, in appreciation of her scientific efforts and her active contribution to the student’s discussion.
Our wishes to our dear students continued success and success
