A seminar in the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences entitled (Life stratigraphy and depositional environment of the giakara formation in north-eastern Iraq)

Under the patronage of the blessing of the dean of the College of science, prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, and the supervision and presence of the head of the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences, Dr. Omar khalouk Mohammed Sajid, the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences held a seminar entitled:“stratigraphy and sedimentary environment of the formation of gyakara in north-eastern Iraq” delivered by doctoral student Ala Mahmoud Said al-Wazzan on Tuesday October 14, 2025, in the presence of a number of department teachers.

The aim of the study was to accurately diagnose the life components, especially in the Jurassic/Cretaceous seam zone within the two sections under study،

By studying the biostratigraphy of calcareous nanofossils, dinoflagellates, foraminifera, Radiolaria, and accurately determining the age of the formation using these fossils. The study also dealt with the analysis of the depositional environment and the conclusion of the Paleoenvironment of the formation and the correlation of life variations across the contact zone between the Jurassic and Cretaceous with the anisotropy, paleoenvironmental conditions, mineralogical and geochemical variations.

We wish our students the time of giving and creativity in their academic and research career, which contributes to the review of the country’s wealth and the study of its geography.
