Master thesis discusses the development of new spectroscopic methods for the estimation of some biochemical compounds in various biological fluids

On Thursday, November 27, 2025, the Department of Chemistry at the College of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis submitted by the student Abdullah Mohammed Muwaffaq al-Saegh and tagged: “development of new Spectral methods for estimating some chemical compounds in various biological fluids and their applications to some pathological conditions”, in the presence of administrative assistant Assistant Prof. Dr. Omar Adel Sharif and a number of faculty teachers.
The thesis aimed to develop two innovative spectroscopic methods for the determination of 3-nitrotyrosine and melatonin hormone in biological samples and pharmaceutical preparations based on redox reactions. In the first part, the researcher was able to develop a simple and highly sensitive method for measuring 3-nitrotyrosine using a fluoroclucinol detector, which showed excellent linearity and low detection limit, with successful application to patients ‘ serum samples.
The second part dealt with the estimation of the hormone melatonin through organic condensation reactions resulting in a stable colored compound, and the method was characterized by its accuracy and applicability in pharmaceuticals without the need for complex separation steps.
The applied aspect of the message included the analysis of 3-nitrotyrosine levels in patients with breast cancer, Type II diabetes and chronic renal failure, where the results showed a clear increase compared to healthy people, confirming the possibility of adopting these methods in clinical chemistry laboratories because they are highly sensitive, low costs and easy to apply.
The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Farha Khalaf Omar Ahmed as chairman, and the membership of assistant prof. Dr. Iman Salem Mahmoud Mohammed, and the teacher Dr. Heba Abdulsalam Mohammed Abdullah, and under the supervision and membership of assistant prof. Dr. Saad Hassani Sultan Hashim, and prof. Dr. Louay Abdul Ali al Hilali.
At the end of the discussion, on behalf of the dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the assistant dean for Administrative Affairs, Prof. Dr. Omar Adel Sharif, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Prof. Dr. Farha Khalaf Omar Ahmed from Al Noor University, the chairman of the discussion Committee, expressing gratitude for her scientific efforts and active participation in the success of the Scientific Session.
