Geology and petroleum science students begin a field work course in geological formations in Duhok Governorate

In an atmosphere brimming with scientific passion and a spirit of hands-on learning, and with the dawn of a fruitful academic year, the fieldwork course for students of the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences at the College of Science commenced. This course represents a significant step in preparing a generation of geologists capable of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical field experience, thus serving the oil and natural resources sectors in our beloved country.
Under the generous patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahim, and with the dedicated efforts of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim Al-Tai, and under the direct supervision of the Head of the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences, Dr. Omar Khaloq Mohammed Sajid, the fieldwork course for fourth-year students in Duhok Governorate commenced on Monday, January 19, 2026, with the participation of a specialized scientific committee of college members from the department.
Despite the harsh weather conditions, the students demonstrated remarkable determination and perseverance in undertaking the field experience. The program for the first two days included intensive practical training in conducting geological surveys of the stratigraphic sequences of the exposed formations in the Bekhir anticline, located in northern Iraq. This involved applying field description methods, taking structural measurements, and identifying the lithological characteristics of the rock formations.
The course aims to develop students’ skills in reading geological maps, interpreting depositional environments, and identifying geological structures in the field. This will enhance their scientific and professional readiness and prepare them for future entry into the specialized job market.
We wish all our dear students continued success and excellence.
