Registration of Three New Bacterial Strains in the NCBI Database Isolated from Plastic-Contaminated Soil

As part of the continuous scientific achievements of researchers at the College of Science, a research team has successfully registered three new bacterial strains belonging to the genus Bacillus in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database for the first time. This accomplishment represents a significant contribution to studies related to the bioremediation of environmental pollutants.

The achievement was carried out by Prof. Dr. Amjad Abdulhadi Mohammed, Head of the Department of Biology, and Prof. Dr. Hadeel Ahmed Al-Omari, the Department Rapporteur, in collaboration with MSc student Momin Munhel Abdul Salam. The registered bacterial strains are:

  • Bacillus subtilis B1 — Accession No.: PZ097285.1
  • Bacillus subtilis B2 — Accession No.: PZ097286.1
  • Bacillus halotolerans B3 — Accession No.: PZ097287.1

These strains were isolated from plastic-contaminated soils in Mosul city. Their presence indicates the ability of these bacterial species to degrade plastic materials and utilize them as an energy source, opening promising scientific prospects for their future application in bioremediation technologies aimed at reducing plastic waste and its environmental impacts.

The bacterial isolates were preserved in the strain bank of the Department of Biology to ensure proper documentation and accessibility for researchers, thereby supporting future studies in microbiology and environmental biotechnology.

This achievement reflects the active scientific role of the College of Science researchers in advancing scientific research and providing innovative environmental solutions, as well as enhancing the University of Mosul’s presence in global scientific databases and contributing valuable applied research outcomes to the scientific community.

The College extends its best wishes for continued success and excellence to its faculty members and students.
