Scientific Course on Cyanobacteria and Plant Tissue Culture and In Vitro Propagation

The Department of Medical Physics at the College of Science, University of Mosul, organized a scientific course entitled “Cyanobacteria and Plant Tissue Culture and In Vitro Propagation”, held from Sunday, 22 February to Thursday, 26 February 2026, in the Seminar Hall.

The course was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Rana Tareq Yahya, Lecturer Dr. Hiba Khalil Saeed, and Lecturer Ms. Alin Mowaffaq Khalil.

The course aimed to introduce the scientific foundations and modern laboratory techniques in cyanobacteria cultivation and plant tissue culture, as well as to explain micropropagation mechanisms in laboratory settings. It also highlighted the research and applied importance of these techniques in environmental, medical, and agricultural fields, contributing to the development of students’ and researchers’ laboratory skills based on rigorous scientific standards.

In addition, the course emphasized the vital role of cyanobacteria and their methods of cultivation and propagation, as they are involved in important biological applications such as nitrogen fixation and soil fertility improvement. They also represent a sustainable organic alternative to chemical fertilizers and are considered a potential biofuel source as an alternative to fossil fuels within sustainable development applications.

The course contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals, including:

  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger, by improving soil fertility and agricultural productivity.
  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, through the development of sustainable biofuel alternatives.
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by supporting scientific research and modern biotechnology.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action, by reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmentally friendly energy sources.

Wishing continued progress and success to the faculty members of our college.
