Master thesis discusses the employment of Acar extracted from Red Moss

On Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master thesis entitled ” The efficiency of Acar extracted from Compsopogon Red Moss in the biosynthesis of calcium oxide nanoparticles and their role in the growth of flax seedlings ” presented by student Anfal Amer Zaki Dawood Bakr, from the branch of Botany.

The message aimed to invest Compsopogon red alga as a renewable bio-resource for Acar extraction, employ it in the green bio-manufacturing of calcium oxide nanoparticles, and then apply it in the cultivation of plant tissues for flax seedlings (Linum usitatissimum L.), With the aim of promoting growth, stimulating the production of bioactive compounds, raising the level of gene expression of the chalcone Synthase (CHS) gene responsible for the synthesis of flavonoids.

The results of the study showed the success of extracting natural Acar from Red Moss and using it to produce calcium oxide nanoparticles in environmentally friendly ways, characterized by outstanding physical and chemical properties, as well as achieving a significant improvement in the vegetative and root growth indicators of flax seedlings, increasing the content of the apigenin compound, and a high level of gene expression of the CHS gene compared to the comparison treatment based on the commercial Acar-hardened medium.

The mission highlights the importance of providing a sustainable biological alternative that can be used in Plant Tissue Culture Techniques, contributing to the production of higher quality seedlings, reducing dependence on traditional chemicals, as well as supporting modern trends in agricultural biotechnologies and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The discussion committee consisted of Dr. Jameela Hazza Rashid Najm as chairman, assistant professor Dr. Jahan Muwaffaq said Hassan and teacher Dr. Najla Tarek Hassan Abdul, while the thesis was supervised by Professor Dr. Rana Tarek Yahya Qasim and teacher Dr. Hala Mazhar Yacoub Youssef, who participated in the membership of the discussion Committee.

Our wishes to our dear students continued success and success
