Master thesis at the Faculty of Science discusses the role of heterogeneity in the gene expression responsible for the construction of the dopamine complex in the bulbous plant

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul, on Thursday, July 23, 2026, discussed the tagged master‘s thesis“Investigation of the role of genetic heterogeneity of Portulaca oleracea in the expression efficiency of the gene responsible for the construction, extraction and quantification of the dopamine complex“ Presented by master’s student Zahra Ammar Hassan, majoring in Botany. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the possibility of inducing genetic heterogeneity in the legume plant and its role in improving the efficiency of gene expression associated with one of the most important steps in the biosynthesis of the medically important dopamine complex, through the introduction of genetic transformation using Ri plasmids isolated from Agrobacterium rhizogenes ATCC 15834, in addition to studying the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in seed germination, seedling growth and the production of the compound. The results of the study showed the success of the genetic transformation technique in increasing the amounts of dopamine in the plant, and also showed that exposure to ultraviolet radiation for different periods of time contributed to improving seed germination and seedling growth, as well as increasing the biosynthesis of the compound at some exposure periods. The study included the preparation of alcoholic extracts from various plant tissues and the estimation of dopamine amounts using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technology, as well as evaluating the expression level of the gene (TH) using RT-PCR technology, as the results showed the superiority of transgenic tissues in the level of gene expression activity compared to the rest of the studied samples. The study highlights the importance of employing genetic transformation techniques and physical transactions to enhance the production of bio-compounds of medical importance in plants, which opens up prospects for benefiting from the bulbous plant in Future Biological Studies and applications.
