Master thesis discusses the investigation of virulence genes in bacteria isolated from dacryocystitis patients

On Monday, July 27, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master thesis entitled ” investigating virulence genes in bacteria isolated from dacryocystitis patients in Nineveh Governorate ” presented by master student saja Anwar Fadel from the microbiology branch. The discussion was attended by a number of teachers of the Department of life sciences and graduate students. The aim of the thesis was to isolate and diagnose the bacteria that cause dacryocystis infections, investigate a number of virulence genes associated with them, as well as study the inhibitory effect of lavender plant extracts (Nano, aqueous and alcoholic) against these bacterial species, with the aim of exploring therapeutic alternatives supporting antibiotics. The study resulted in the isolation of a number of bacterial species, some of which were recorded for the first time globally, while investigating a set of important virulence genes, three types of lavender extracts were prepared and their properties were evaluated using UV-Vis, FTIR and HPLC techniques, before testing their effect on bacterial isolates at different concentrations. The results showed a variation in the response of bacteria to extracts, as well as the registration of seven bacterial strains possessing distinctive characteristics for the first time in the global GenBank (GenBank) of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The study confirmed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of dacryocystitis to avoid complications that may affect eye health, and also indicated that the use of natural plant extracts in conjunction with drug therapy may contribute to enhancing the therapeutic response and reducing side effects resulting from the use of chemical drugs. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohsen Ayoub Issa, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Rojan Ghanem Mohammed and the teacher Dr. Heba Khaled Mahmoud, while assistant professor Dr. OS Ibrahim Suleiman supervised the thesis and participated as a member of the discussion Committee.
