Master thesis discusses the effect of biofertilizers in some physiological processes and the content of terpenoid compounds in the mint plant

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled ” The effect of biofertilizers on some physiological processes and the content of some terpenoid compounds in the mint plant (Mentha) grown in two types of soil”, presented by researcher Faner Bashar Fadel Khalil. The dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, and the assistant dean for Administrative Affairs, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Sobhi, along with a number of teachers of the Department of life sciences and graduate students, attended part of the discussion. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of biofertilizers, represented by Bacillus bacteria and Trichoderma fungus, in improving the growth of the mint plant, raising its phycological efficiency and increasing the production of effective secondary compounds, especially menthol and menthone compounds, as well as studying the impact of soil quality in the plant’s response to these vital transactions, thus contributing to enhancing the productivity of medicinal and aromatic plants and improving their quality. The results of the study showed that the use of biofertilizers, in particular the co-pollination of Bacillus and Trichoderma, led to a significant improvement in a number of physiological qualities of the mint plant, increased the content of terpenoid compounds of pharmacological and aromatic importance, with a clear superiority of plants grown in mixed clay soil compared to mixed sandy soil. The results also confirmed the possibility of using biofertilizers as an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers, in line with the trends of sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, and contribute to the development of the production of medicinal and aromatic plants and raise their economic value. The discussion committee consisted of Dr. Amjad Abdul Hadi Mohammed Ali as chairman, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Wassan Saleh Hussein Ali and teacher Dr. may Taha Hamid Ahmed, while the thesis was supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Alaa Hussein Ali Mohammed and participated in the membership of the committee.
