The Faculty of Science discusses a master’s thesis on the immune response associated with infection with the Leishmania parasite

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science / University of Mosul, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” evaluation of gene expression of genes associated with the immune response in neutrophils infected with the tropical Leishmania parasite (Leishmania tropica) ” presented by student Sora Saleh Saeb Yunus al-Jubouri, Zoology specialist. The aim of the study was to evaluate some of the immunological and biochemical indicators associated with the immune response in patients with leishmaniasis caused by the Leishmania tropica parasite in Mosul, by measuring the concentrations of a number of immunological indicators, including IL-10ra, RAB7A and YEZH2, as well as chemical indicators represented by Vitamin D3, ferritin, procalcitonin, calcium and LDH enzyme, in order to clarify its role in the mechanisms of immune response and pathogenesis associated with infection. The study was not limited to evaluating these indicators individually, but also addressed the relationship between immunological and biochemical changes and the mechanisms of interaction of the parasite with immune cells, as the results showed that local infection with Leishmania dermatophytes causes physiological and systemic disorders represented by a significant decrease in calcium and vitamin D3 levels, and a clear increase in the LDH enzyme, which indicates cellular damage and increased tissue turnover rate. The results also showed a significant increase in the level of RAB7A, while there were no significant differences in the levels of IL-10ra, EZH2, ferritin and procalcitonin, which indicates that the immune response in cutaneous leishmaniasis is characterized by a local response rather than a systemic inflammatory response, which opens up new horizons for understanding the overlap between immunity and metabolism in the pathogenicity of the disease, and the possibility of using these indicators in improving diagnosis and clinical follow-up of patients.
