Master thesis discusses the evaluation of rheological performance of polymer modified kaiara asphalt

The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, discussed the master thesis tagged ” evaluation of rheological performance and durability of asphalt mixtures using Qayyarah asphalt modified with chemically active polymers ” by master student Ahmed Abdul Rahman Abdullah al-Zubaidi, in the Hall of Professor Dr. Yousef Abdullah Shihab for discussions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the rheological performance, durability, and storage stability of kaiara asphalt with a high sulfur content by modifying it using a flexible and chemically active polymer (Elvaloy RET) in combination with auxiliary additives, in order to address the phenomenon of phase separation and improve the engineering properties of the asphalt bond to resist permanent deformations and thermal cracks under different climatic conditions. The practical methodology involved the preparation of mixtures in graduated proportions of a polymer (RET) and testing of polymer systems with additives, including elemental sulfur, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), used automotive oil (WO), a complex system of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and surfactant (SR), evaluated through rheological examinations, microscopic and chemical analyzes (FTIR). The main results and conclusions of the study: Optimal balance point: the results showed that the addition of 1% chemically active polymer (RET) represents the optimal balance between hardness and elasticity without agglomeration or phase separation. High synergistic efficiency: the study proved the high efficiency of the synergistic composite system consisting of (RET, PPA, SR), which achieved complete storage stability and an ideal balance in rheological properties, which prompted the study to recommend the adoption of this innovative mixture in the hot-zone road construction sector to ensure the durability of paving. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Abdul Rahman basil Fadel Amin, with the membership of: assistant professor Dr. wajdan Mohammed Saleh Mohammed, teacher Dr. Amna Farouk Sanalla al-Omari, and under the supervision and membership of assistant professor Dr. Iman Ismail Ahmed majzaz. At the end of the discussion, on behalf of the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim al-Taie, the rapporteur of the Department of chemistry, assistant professor Dr. Basma Ahmed Abdul Hadi, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to the member of the discussion Committee, Assistant Professor Dr. wajdan Mohammed Saleh Mohammed, in appreciation of her valuable scientific efforts exerted in the student discussion. The committee also praised the outstanding scientific effort and its direct applied importance in the engineering and industrial sectors. We wish our dear students continued excellence and success in their scientific career.
