Master thesis discusses the life stratigraphy of calcareous nanoliths in the comitan formation in northern Iraq

On Thursday, August 20, 2026, the Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” life stratigraphy of calcareous nanoliths for the formation of cometans in the well ( 41 – ja), in northern Iraq ” by the researcher ( Rawa Khalid Shaker Mahmoud al-Shamma), in the presence of the head of the department, Dr. Omar khalouk Mohammed Sajid, and a number of department teachers and graduate students . The taxonomic study of the studied section in this research recorded the diagnosis of (63) types of calcareous Nano-fossils belonging to (36) genera within (15) families (60) species previously named three species open scientific nomenclature until new information is obtained to support the diagnosis in the future Five life zones were identified through the study site in the jumbur oil field and were arranged from the oldest at the bottom to the newest at the top Marthasterites furcatus interval biozone CC 13. The stratigraphic age of the studied section of the comitan formation has been determined to extend from the early conishian to the early Campanian and this age determination corresponds to the approved regional and international records of the sedimentary basin of the formation. The climatic conditions in the comitan formation were reconstructed, where insights were provided on the climatic conditions during the late Cretaceous period based on the function nanocalcite fossils and it turned out that they reflect the warm climatic conditions that prevailed during deposition in a deep marine environment ، The discussion Committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Ibrahim Younis Ahmed Al-Sharifi, with the membership of assistant professor Dr. Mahfouz Abdullah Ali, teacher Dr. Rana Abdullah Mahmoud, and with the membership and supervision of assistant professor Dr. Abdullah Sultan Shihab Ahmed.
