Master thesis examines the bacteria causing infections associated with artificial respiration devices and their pathological characteristics

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” the spread of virulence genes among the main pathogenic germs associated with infection of artificial ventilation devices“, submitted by researcher Naba Mohammed Iqbal Tahsin, on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The study aimed at isolating and diagnosing infection-causing bacteria associated with mechanical ventilation from samples taken from endotracheal intubation tubes of patients placed on artificial respiration devices, using transplant examinations and molecular diagnostics based on amplification and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, as well as studying their sensitivity to antibiotics, resistance to human blood serum, susceptibility to the formation of biofilms, studying the effect of diazepam, one of the drugs of the benzodiazepine group, in the formation of biofilms, in addition a number of genes associated with virulence factors in some bacterial isolates. The results of molecular diagnostics of a number of Gram-negative bacterial isolates showed the presence of Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, delftia tsuruhatensis, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Enterobacter cloacae, Pseudomonas rhodesiae and acinetobacter baumannii. All isolates also showed multiple antibiotic resistance with different resistance patterns between species, while resistance to the antibiotics Meropenem and mimipenem was not recorded. All isolates showed resistance to human blood serum, as well as susceptibility to biofilm formation to varying degrees, while the effect of benzodiazepines on biofilm formation differed depending on the type of isolation and the concentration of the drug. maltophilia and D. tsuruhatensis, which contributes to the further understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of this bacterium and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohsen Ayoub Issa, with the membership of assistant professor Dr. Inas Abdel Moneim Hassan, teacher Dr. Taqi Moayed Bakr, and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim.
