Doctoral dissertation discusses the preparation, diagnosis and theoretical study of new complexes derived from heterocyclic ligands

The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the doctoral thesis tagged” preparation, diagnosis and theoretical study of new complexes derived from heterocyclic ligands with transitional and main elements and evaluating their biological effectiveness ” on Monday, August 24, 2026, attended by the dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the Scientific Assistant, the head of the department and a number of graduate students. The thesis submitted by the student (Saba Mumtaz Saleh al-Asali) from the branch of inorganic chemistry dealt with the preparation and diagnosis of fifty new harmonic complexes, as well as the synthesis of five basic ligands. The work was divided into two stages: The first stage included the organic part: preparation of five heterocyclic chelating ligands(L1-L5) . The second stage included the inorganic part: the preparation of coordination complexes of these ligands with different molar ratios between the ligand and the metal ion(2L1:1m), (2L1:2m), (Ln: M) and(2ln:1m) using metal salts mn (II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn (II), resulting in complexes with new formulas. Lycands and their complexes were diagnosed using multiple techniques, including microarray analysis, spectroscopy (infrared, electron Spectra, NMR Proton spectrum), as well as measurements of magnetic sensitivity and molar electrical conductivity.Also, some theoretical computational measurements were carried out using the density function (DFT) of the prepared ligands and complexes as well as the measurement of antibacterial efficacy to assess the biological effectiveness of both prepared lycands and complexes against two types of bacteria: Escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus. The results showed a remarkable inhibitory activity of metal complexes, especially copper complexes belonging to L4 and L5, compared to free ligands, exceeding the inhibition diameters of reference standard antagonists (Cefotaxime) and (Ampicillin), indicating the possibility of their future use in Pharmacological applications.The study also included the assessment of biochemical effects using (80) white male mice in which renal cell carcinoma was chemically induced by injection with (N-Nitrosodimethylamine) NDMA for four months, the affected group was treated with peritoneal injections of lindane L3 and L5 and their complexes [ZnL3Cl2] and [CuL5Cl2] in three doses (0.5, 1, 1.5 mg/kg)for 21 days. Biochemical evaluation of blood serum showed a significant significant decrease (p≤0.05) in the levels of renal inflammatory and tumor indicators (COX-2, TNF-α, IL-6, LOX-2) and optimal therapeutic efficiency was recorded at dose concentration (1 mg/kg). These results matched the histopathological examination of the treated kidney tissue, in which a sharp regression of tumor-like cells was observed with the restoration of the normal histological structure of the glomeruli and renal tubules.
