A lecturer from the Faculty of science participates in the discussion of a doctoral thesis at the University of Kirkuk

Within the framework of enhancing scientific and academic cooperation between Iraqi universities, assistant professor Dr. Falah Abdul Muhammad Al – Mamari, a lecturer at the Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of science–Mosul University, participated in the discussion of the doctoral thesis tagged ” sedimentology, Mineralogy, geochemistry and hydrocarbon maturity assessment of Carnian–Norian – Rhaetian deposits at the boundary between the Kura shin and baluti formations in the Kurdistan region, northeastern Iraq ” by researcher Iman Walid Wahid from the Faculty of Science-University of Kirkuk, on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The dissertation dealt with the study of the sedimentary, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the Kura shin and Pallotti formations, the determination of sedimentation environments and ancient conditions that prevailed during the late Triassic, along with assessing their potential as sources of hydrocarbons and the degree of thermal maturity, based on a number of modern geological and geochemical analyzes. The results showed the identification of six microplastics in the Pallotti formation and four microplastics in the Kura Shin formation, with variation in depositional environments; the Pallotti formation was associated with limited marine environments with high salinity and limited water circulation, while the Kura Shin formation was deposited in more open and rotating marine environments. The study concluded that the two formations represent part of the evolution of a shallow carbonate platform during the late Triassic on the margin of the neo-Tethys, influenced by multiple climatic, environmental and geochemical factors. This participation comes as a confirmation of the distinguished scientific presence of the Faculty of science teachers, and their contributions to supporting academic and research cooperation and participation in scientific and University forums.
