Master thesis discusses the effect of chlorhexidine in worm-like micelles and their biological effectiveness

The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Monday, September 7, 2026, discussed the master thesis tagged ” the effect of adding chlorhexidine to worm-like micelles gel on stability and sterilization efficiency”, which was presented by student Omar Abdulsalam mudalla Al-Nuaimi, in the Hall of Professor Dr. Yousef Abdullah Shihab for discussions. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of chlorhexidine (Chlorhexidine), used as a sterile and antiseptic substance in oral care preparations, in the systems of surfactants, to study its effect on the physical and chemical properties of solvents, the possibility of their preparation in a gel form, as well as to assess the stability of chlorhexidine and its biological effectiveness. The study included three main axes; the first dealt with the effect of chlorhexidine in the CTAB/SDS system at a concentration of 3% and in different mixing ratios, as the results showed an increase in viscosity and the formation of worm-like micelles, with the possibility of preparing the system in a gel form. The second Axis Focused on the study of the stability of chlorhexidine and the kinetics of its decomposition in various solutions, and the results showed that the decomposition follows a first-order Kinetics, with the superiority of the SDS system with a concentration of 3% in improving the stability. The third axis deals with the evaluation of the biological effectiveness of chlorhexidine against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, as the results showed improved effectiveness, extended disinfection time and shelf life, and the highest sterilization efficiency was recorded when using the SDS/CTAB system by 20/80. In general, the results indicated the possibility of using methyl systems, in particular the SDS/CTAB 20/80 system, to improve the stability and biological effectiveness of chlorhexidine, with the possibility of preparing it in a gel form, making it a promising option for the development of antiseptic preparations with higher efficiency and stability. The discussion Committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Adel Sharif, with the membership of assistant professor Dr. Ala Mohammed Tayeb Hussein and assistant professor Dr. Fanar Mohammed Ismail, and under the supervision and membership of Professor Dr. Rabah Ali Khalil. At the end of the discussion, the committee praised the scientific effort exerted in the thesis and its applied importance in the medical and commercial fields.
