Master thesis discusses ostracoda and stratigraphy of the pubic formation of northern Iraq

The Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of Science discussed, on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the master thesis tagged “ostracoda and life stratigraphy study of pubic formation for a section in northern Iraq,” submitted by researcher Israa Nashwan Yahya Mohammed al-Taie. The study dealt with the crowds of ostracods to form a pubis in the well of khabaz (3) within the khabaz oil field in Kirkuk governorate, as the taxonomic study included the diagnosis of (54) species of ostracoda belonging to (31) genera, including (47) previously named species, as well as the registration of (7) new species, representing important information to support future studies of this fossil species. Based on the stratigraphic distribution of ostracoda fossils, three main life assemblage zones and two secondary ranges have been identified within the studied section, arranged from the oldest to the most recent, namely: Actinocythere orinta – Costa hermi Assemblage Biozone Trachyleberis leei Assemblage Subzone Stigymatocythere indica Assemblage Subzone Murrayina gibberula – Xestoleberis obtuse Assemblage Biozone Candona (Pseudocandona) fertilis – Miocyprideis lyubimovae Assemblage Biozone He also determined the stratigraphic age of the pubic formation in the studied section as belonging to the late Oligocene (Late Oligocene), which corresponds to the approved regional and global stratigraphic records. The study showed that ostracoda fossils reflect a shallow and calm Marine depositional environment behind the reef (back reef environment) with low water energy, and also contributed to the determination of paleoclimatic and environmental conditions during the period of deposition of the pubis formation. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Omar Ahmed Mouloud Shihab, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Ibrahim Younis Ahmed and teacher Dr. Rana Abdullah Mahmoud, while Dr. Nasrin Malallah Aziz Mahmoud participated as a member and supervisor.
