Master thesis discusses sedimentology and tectonics of the sequences of the formation of the hole in the Mateen fold in northern Iraq

The Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of science at Mosul University discussed, on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the master thesis tagged ” sedimentary study and tectonic status of the formation sequences of the opening in the southern flank of the Mateen fold, northern Iraq, ” submitted by researcher Shirin Hussein Haji Mohammed. The aim of the study was to determine the depositional environment and the sedimentary basin of the vent formation, which dates back to the Middle Miocene, as well as the characterization of sedimentary rock formations, microscopic formations and the depositional environment, study the tectonic evolution of the formation and assess the impact of tectonic activity on sedimentation processes. The study included the analysis of (35) thin rock slices, which showed the presence of a group of structural granules, and through the results of these analyzes, six main microscopic fragments were distinguished, which contributed to the explanation of the depositional environment and the geological evolution of the formation. The study recommended conducting engineering studies of the area for the purpose of determining the risks of collapses, as well as conducting subsurface studies to identify and derive subsurface faults affecting the depositional environment of the formation. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Rafi Ibrahim Abdullah Hamidi, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Falah Abdul Mohammed Azzawi, assistant professor Dr. Rabie Khalaf Hassan, Assistant Professor Dr. Safwan Fathi Hamid, while assistant professor Dr. Saddam Isa Mustafa participated as a member and supervisor.
