Master thesis on ostracoda, stratigraphy and Paleoenvironment of the komitan formation in northern Iraq

The Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of Science discussed, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, the master’s thesis tagged “ostracoda, stratigraphy and Paleoenvironment of comitan formation in the engana-5 well, Hamrin region, northern Iraq”, submitted by researcher Ikram Ghanem Hazem Talab Al-Jubouri, part of the discussion was attended by the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, and the head of the Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Omar khalouk Mohammed Sajid. The aim of the study was to determine the biostratigraphic age and reconstruct the Paleoenvironment of the Turonian–Santonian comitan formation in the engana-5 well, based on ostracoda assemblages, and included the collection and analysis of 61 models of drill crumbs and the study of the stratigraphic distribution of ostracoda and their ecological significance. The study showed that the ostracod assemblages contributed to determining the age of the comitan formation and interpreting its deep marine depositional environment during the Upper Cretaceous, while recommending detailed future studies on the comitan formation using various microfossils to enhance biostrategographic accuracy and reconstruct ancient environments in Iraq. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Maha Abdul Hamid Mustafa, the membership of assistant professor Dr. Abdullah Sultan Shihab Ahmed and assistant professor Dr. Ibrahim Younis Ahmed, and the membership and supervision of Professor Dr. Nasreen Malallah Aziz Mahmoud. We wish the researcher and all graduate students and teachers of the Faculty of science success, excellence and creativity.
