The Department of Life Sciences holds a continuing education course on the use of the 16S rRNA gene in bacterial diagnostics

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Mosul held a scientific course entitled “From 16S rRNA gene to bacterial diagnosis: a Complete Practical Guide” (From 16s rRNA to Bacterial Identification: A Complete Practical Guide), for the period from October 11 to 15, 2026, in the Hall of Dr. Mahmoud Haj Qasim, with the participation of teachers and graduate students. The course was attended by Professor Dr. Israa Ghanem Hazem al-Samak and the teacher Dr. Huda Walid Hadi al-Hayali, and their lectures discussed the importance of the 16S rRNA gene in the molecular diagnosis of bacteria, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, and DNA sequencing sequencing techniques. The course also included practical applications on the database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the use of MEGA 12 and finchtv programs for the analysis of genetic sequences and bacterial identification. The course stressed the importance of employing molecular and bioinformatics technologies in developing the skills of researchers and enhancing the accuracy of bacterial diagnosis, and concluded by distributing certificates of participation to attendees. Our wishes to the course leaders and participants for continued success and continued scientific and academic giving.
