Master thesis defense on “Modeling of Three-Phase Oil Separator Considering Qayyarah Crude Oil Using CFD Analysis”

Department of Mechanical Engineering  / College of Engineering at University of Mosul discussed a master’s thesis on ” Modeling of Three-Phase Oil Separator Considering Qayyarah Crude Oil Using CFD Analysis ” on Sunday, Oct 08, 2023.
The student’s thesis, “Ali Ahmed Ibrahim,” aimed to design a three-phase oil separator (water, oil, and gas) and perform a simulation of the separator using a computational fluid dynamics program.
The thesis discussed the importance of three-phase oil separators in the oil and gas industry, emphasizing their vital role in achieving optimal processing, reducing negative environmental impacts, and enhancing production efficiency. Computational fluid dynamics is shown as an effective tool for designing separators by simulating real-world conditions, reducing the need for physical experiments and associated costs. A model of the oil separator was designed based on the properties of Qayyarah crude oil. The study investigated the impact of the presence and location of the inlet diverter on the separator’s performance, as well as the reduction of water droplets in the oil.
The results showed that adding an inlet diverter to the separator increases the efficiency of separation for the three phases. Additionally, the results demonstrated clear variations in the separator’s performance based on the distance of the inlet diverter from the separator’s entrance.
The thesis defense committee was chaired by Assist. Prof. Dr. Omar Rafee Mahmoud (Northern Technical University / College of Engineering / Mosul), with the membership of Assist. Prof. Dr. Omar Mohammed Hamdoon and Lecturer Dr. Ahmed Fouad Mahmoud. The supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Amir Sultan Dawood (First Supervisor) and Lecturer Dr. Younis Mahal Najim (second-Supervisor) .
