Master’s Thesis Defense at College of Engineering on “The Impact of Functional Type Variation on the Architectural Characteristics of Dome Utilization in Buildings”

Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering, University of Mosul, held a master’s thesis defense on Thursday, May 29, 2025, for the thesis titled: “The Impact of Functional Type Variation on the Architectural Characteristics of Dome Utilization in Buildings” presented by the student Maryam Elias Saeed Hidaya.

The thesis explored the use of domes in buildings with different functional types, emphasizing the significance of the topic due to the lack of comprehensive studies on domes in previous research, which often focused on a single function or specific region. The study adopted an analytical methodology to construct a theoretical framework that defines the architectural characteristics of domes based on building function. It was practically applied by selecting and analyzing samples using AutoCAD, followed by statistical discussion of the results.

The findings revealed that the architectural characteristics of domes vary depending on the functional type of the building. The function significantly affects the shape, number, and structural influence of the dome, which distinguishes each building type with its own architectural features. The study also showed both differences and similarities among various types, reinforcing the research hypothesis.

The study aimed to uncover the architectural characteristics of domes in religious buildings, service buildings, and shrines, and to identify the changes that occur due to variations in building type and function.
