Training Course at College of Engineering on Using Different Loss and Transformation Methods in HEC-HMS Model

Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering at College of Engineering organized a training course entitled “Using Different Loss and Transformation Methods in HEC-HMS Model” on Monday, June 22, 2025. The course extends for five days.
Lectures were delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Muqdad Abdulghani, Assistant Professor Dr. Saleh Mohammed Saleh Zakaria, Lecturer Dr. Ziyad Ayoub Suleiman, Lecturer Dr. Muhannad Talal Yousif, and Instructor Mohammed Awni Khattab. They presented a series of lectures aimed at enhancing knowledge and competence in the application of engineering software related to the field of water resources.
Topics covered included understanding how to simulate rainfall-runoff processes and estimate runoff volumes, applying one of the most important modern software tools—HEC-HMS, learning the concept of hydrologic transformation, understanding rainfall loss, exploring the various available methods for loss and transformation within the HEC-HMS model, selecting appropriate loss and transformation methods based on the watershed’s nature and data, applying statistical techniques to evaluate each method’s results, and finally, a practical application using the HEC-HMS hydrologic model.
The course aimed to enhance the participants’ capabilities by enabling engineers and researchers to use the HEC-HMS software for hydrologic analysis through a clear understanding of rainfall-runoff simulation and the use of different loss and transformation methods.
