A master’s thesis discussing the assessment of plastic particle pollution…

With the membership and supervision of Professor Dr. Qusay Kamal al-Din al-Ahmadi, President of the University of Mosul, and Dr. Rasha Khaled Sabri, the College of Environmental Sciences and Technologies discussed the master’s thesis entitled “Assessing pollution with plastic particles inside buildings” by the student Rehab Saleh Abdullah.

The study aimed to detect the presence of microplastic particles inside buildings, determine their abundance, and compare levels of pollution with microplastic particles between different indoor environments, in addition to studying the phenotypic properties of microplastic particles inside buildings, such as color and shape, using an anatomical light microscope, and also the chemical composition of the polymer using FTIR technology. So that we can accurately know the sources of the original plastic particles and also support future studies that aim to know the methods of spread or transfer of plastic particles, as well as the methods of treating them.

The study recommended studying the effect of ventilation means, such as air conditioners, on the abundance of microplastic particles inside buildings, evaluating the health effects of microplastic particles suspended in the air surrounding humans and entering the human body through inhalation, as well as studying the health effects resulting from the ingestion of plastic particles deposited in foods and drinks, and creating natural alternatives or It is biodegradable and eliminates the need for plastic. In addition to studying the long-term or short-term toxic effects on living organisms by using laboratory rats, assessing the pollution with plastic particles deposited outside buildings, studying its effect on plants and soil, as well as proposing some economic and possible solutions to overcome the problem of plastic particle pollution.

The discussion committee was headed by Professor Dr. Farha Khalaf Omar, the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Abdel Moneim Muhammad Ali, Dr. Ansam Ahmed Saadoun, and the membership and supervision of Professor Dr. Qusay Kamal Al-Din Al-Ahmadi and Dr. Rasha Khaled Sabry.

The Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences and Technologies, Assistant Professor Dr. Yusra Majeed Al-Shaker, also presented a certificate of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Farha Khalaf Omar, teaching at Al Nour University College, for her participation in the student’s discussion committee.

The discussion took place in the corridors of the College of Environmental Sciences and Technologies on Wednesday morning at nine o’clock in the morning, corresponding to September 20, 2023.
