The College of Environmental Sciences discusses a master’s thesis on selecting the optimal site for solid waste burial.

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and in the presence of the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Muhammad Walid Saeed, the master’s thesis discussion entitled “Selecting the Optimal Site for Solid Waste Landfill in the City of Tal Afar Using Multi-Criteria Analysis and Geographic Information Systems” was held this morning, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, for the student Bara’ Yaqoub Ishaq Matti, in the discussion hall of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering.
The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Laith Hassan Omar, with the membership of Assistant Professor Izz Al-Din Saleh Hassan and Assistant Professor Rasha Khaled Sabri, under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Iyad Fadhil Qasim and Assistant Professor Raed Mahmoud Faisal. The study aimed to build a spatial model for selecting the optimal site for solid waste landfills, by analyzing environmental and social criteria using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques and the Multi-Criteria Decomposition Model (MCDM) analysis method. This ensures accurate spatial decisions based on objective data. It also proposes sustainable solutions for solid waste management and landfills, aiming to reduce environmental impact and improve public health by adopting an integrated approach that takes into account environmental sustainability and community needs. The study also achieved five Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).
At the end of the discussion, the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Muhammad Walid Saeed, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Laith Hassan Omar, University of Mosul / College of Education for Humanities, and to Assistant Professor Dr. Ezz El-Din Saleh Hassan, University of Mosul / College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, in appreciation of their efforts.
