The College of Environmental Sciences discusses a master’s thesis on diagnosing microplastic pollution in groundwater.

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and in the presence of the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Dr. Omar Idris, the master’s thesis defense in the Department of Environmental Sciences, entitled “Study and Diagnosis of Microplastic Pollution in Groundwater in Nineveh Governorate,” was held this morning, Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in the discussion hall of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering. The thesis, entitled “Study and Diagnosis of Microplastic Pollution in Groundwater in Nineveh Governorate,” was held for student Qais Muhammad Hamad Muhammad. The thesis was held in the discussion hall of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering.
The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Alaa Ismail Ayoub, with the membership of Assistant Professor Taha Ahmed Taha and Assistant Professor Muhammad Walid Saeed, and under the supervision and membership of Professor Qusay Kamal Al-Din Al-Ahmadi and Assistant Professor Rasha Khaled Sabri.
The study aimed to assess the availability of microplastic particles in the groundwater of Nineveh Governorate, with a focus on determining their quantitative and qualitative abundance in the various study wells and studying the following characteristics (size, shape, color, and polymer type) of plastic particles in groundwater. The study also achieved five Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).
At the conclusion of the discussion, the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Dr. Omar Idris, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Alaa Ismail Ayoub, University of Mosul/College of Science, and to Assistant Professor Taha Ahmed Taha, University of Mosul/Environmental Research Center, in recognition of their distinguished scientific efforts.
