College of Environmental Sciences

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and with the supervision of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Professor Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, the Master’s thesis defense in the Department of Environmental Sciences, entitled “Optimal Site Selection for Solar Energy Projects in Nineveh Province Using AI and GIS,” was held this morning, Saturday, September 6, 2025, in the discussion hall of our college. The defense was held for the student Salah Jankir Ibrahim Muhammad Ali, entitled “Optimal Site Selection for Solar Energy Projects in Nineveh Province Using AI and GIS.” The thesis was presented by Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Saleh, and included Assistant Professor Sabah Hussein Ali and Assistant Professor Muhammad Fakhruddin. The defense committee was supervised and included Professor Qusay Kamal Al-Din Al-Ahmadi and Assistant Professor Ali Zain Al-Abidin Haider.
The study aimed to identify and analyze the main factors influencing the selection of solar power plant sites, including environmental, technical, and socio-economic factors, and to identify the most appropriate sites for solar energy projects in Nineveh Governorate. The study also achieved six Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 13 (Climate Action).
At the end of the discussion, the Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Professor Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Saleh, University of Mosul / College of Computer Science and Mathematics, and to Assistant Professor Sabah Hussein Ali, University of Mosul / Center for Remote Sensing, in appreciation of their valuable scientific comments and sound guidance.
