The College of Environmental Sciences discusses a master’s thesis on the environmental sustainability of the Jerkas Formation in selected areas of northern Iraq.

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and in the presence of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Professor Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, and accompanied by the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Dr. Omar Idris Saleh Al-Maamari, the Master’s thesis defense in the Department of Environmental Sciences, entitled “Environmental Sustainability of the Jerkas Formation in Selected Areas of the Kurdistan Region of Northern Iraq,” was held this morning, Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in the discussion hall of our college. The defense was held for student Zainab Omar Hazem Abdul Rahman in the discussion hall of our college.
The defense committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Alaa Nabil Hamdoun, and included Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Abdullah Ismail and Assistant Professor Dr. Hazem Jumaa Mahmoud, under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Walid Saeed and Assistant Professor Dr. Izz Al-Din Saleh Hassan.
The study aimed to analyze the geological characteristics of the Jerkas Formation in terms of structures, age, and depositional environment, in addition to evaluating the physical and engineering characteristics of the formation through laboratory tests. The study also achieved six Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 15 (Life on Land), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
At the end of the discussion, the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Professor Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Alaa Nabil Hamdoun, University of Mosul/Remote Sensing Center, and to Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Abdullah Ismail, University of Mosul/College of Education for Humanities, in appreciation of their valuable scientific comments and sound guidance.
