Seminar in the Department of Environmental Health

Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Tai, and with the attendance of the Head of the Environmental Health Department, Dr. Mohammed Yahya Alawi, a seminar entitled “Toxicity of Household Cleaners and Their Impact on Human Health and the Environment” was held in the Environmental Health Department. The seminar was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Yusra Majeed Shihab, a faculty member in the Environmental Health Department at our college.

The seminar addressed the chemical toxicity of household cleaners and disinfectants and the health damage they cause when used excessively or mixed with other substances such as chlorine and ammonia. This leads to the emission of toxic gases that cause serious respiratory problems such as allergies, asthma, and eye and skin irritation.

The seminar also explained that some cleaners contain toxic compounds such as diethanolamine, which negatively affect the liver, kidneys, lungs, and nervous system. Additionally, some fragrances react with the air to produce carcinogenic compounds such as formaldehyde. The episode concluded by emphasizing the need to raise community awareness about the dangers of chemical toxicity in detergents, and to encourage their moderate and safe use, in order to protect human health and the environment.
