Active participation of the staff of the College of Environmental Sciences in the first International Book Fair at the University of Mosul

A number of faculty members from the College of Environmental Sciences at the University of Mosul participated in the first International Book Fair held on the university campus. Their participation aimed to promote scientific and academic culture and raise environmental awareness among students and visitors.
A scientific dialogue session entitled “A Journey Between Traditional Methods and Modern Technologies for Testing Potable Water” was held. The session was presented by Mr. Muthanna Waad Mohammed from the College of Environmental Sciences, and moderated by Mr. Salem Rabie Zannad, also from the College of Environmental Sciences. The session addressed the importance of traditional methods for testing drinking water, which rely on color and gravimetric indicators in scientific laboratories. It explained how these methods were the starting point for conducting laboratory tests on drinking water to ensure its purity and suitability for human use. The session also discussed the technological advancements in the field of drinking water testing, including the use of drones, geographic information systems (GIS), and sensors, which have saved time and effort and provided greater accuracy.
In addition, the session addressed the importance of water as a fundamental element of sustainable development and the environmental challenges facing access to drinking water in Iraq, particularly in the city of Mosul. This participation achieved two Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and Goal 13: Climate Action.
At the end of the session, Mr. Salem Rabie Zenad issued a plea for environmental awareness regarding the water scarcity in the Tigris River and how we are heading towards water shortages due to pollution, climate change, and reduced water flow from upstream countries.
