Workshop at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences: The Role of Afforestation in Achieving Environmental Balance

Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and the supervision of Professor Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Tai, Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, the College of Environmental Sciences/Administrative Affairs Division – Technical Activities Unit, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at our college, held a scientific workshop entitled “Afforestation: A Health and Environmental Asset.”

The workshop was presented by Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Ismail Suleiman and Mr. Falah Hassan Hamed. The workshop highlighted the importance of afforestation in improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. It also stabilizes the soil, combats desertification, and reduces environmental pollution. Furthermore, it contributes to moderating the local climate and supporting biodiversity, making the environment more balanced, healthy, and sustainable. Afforestation is a fundamental pillar for building a sustainable environment that contributes to human health and the stability of the ecosystem. It also reflects a societal awareness of the importance of preserving and developing nature for present and future generations. This workshop achieved six Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

Finally, the floor was opened for questions and discussions, allowing attendees to exchange views on ways to promote a culture of tree planting and support sustainable environmental initiatives.
