A seminar in the Department of Environmental Health on pollution and metabolic diseases

Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Tai, and with the attendance of the Head of the Department of Environmental Health, Dr. Mohammed Yahya Alawi, a seminar entitled “The Relationship Between Pollution and Chronic Metabolic Diseases” was held in the Department of Environmental Health. The seminar was presented by Dr. Liqaa Saeed Abdullah, a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Health at our college.

The seminar addressed the impact of environmental pollutants on chronic metabolic diseases through molecular, hormonal, and epigenetic mechanisms. These mechanisms include hormonal imbalances, inflammation, altered adipose tissue and adipokine function, mitochondrial dysfunction, and changes in lipid levels (HDL, LDL, and triglycerides). Exposure to air, chemical, and noise pollution was also discussed. By examining these interconnected mechanisms, conclusions were drawn regarding how environmental pollution contributes to an increased risk of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular complications, and liver, kidney, and respiratory diseases.
