Master thesis discusses a palynological study of the formation of the opening in the convex bikhir fold in northern Iraq

On Sunday, October 5, 2025, the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences / College of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled ” A palynological study of the formation of the hole in the convex Bichir fold in northern Iraq ” by student Ahmed Sharif Mohammed Ali Hussein.
A number of teachers of the department and graduate students attended part of the discussion.
The thesis aims to study the formation of the hatch (from the Middle Miocene age) in the Dohuk region through the analysis of pollen and spores to determine the geological age and depositional environment of the formation.
The study involved collecting 15 Rock models of the formation, preparing them in a laboratory and studying them under a microscope to identify species and correlate them with global studies.
The results resulted in the registration of 50 species belonging to 30 genera, the identification of three palynological zones that helped to establish the geological age and reconstruct the ancient environment of the region.
The letter recommended the need to expand palynological studies in other areas of the formation of the opening, combining them with modern geological methods to reach more accurate and comprehensive results.
This study is in line with the fifteenth Sustainable Development Goal (life on land), as it contributes to a deeper understanding of geological and environmental history, and supports research that promotes the sustainability of Natural Resources and the protection of terrestrial ecosystems.
We wish our dear students continued success and success .
