A seminar entitled: Stratigraphy and sedimentation of the Sarmord Formation in northern Iraq

Under the auspices of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, and with the supervision and attendance of the Head of the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences, Dr. Omar Khaloq Mohammed Sajid, the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences held a seminar entitled: “Stratigraphic and Sedimentological Study of the Sarmord Formation in Selected Sections from Northern Iraq.” The seminar was presented by doctoral student Izzat Ibrahim Khader, and part of it was attended by the Head of the Department, Dr. Saddam Issa Mustafa, and a number of distinguished faculty members.

The study examined the calcareous nanofossils and sedimentological analysis of the Sarmord Formation, which dates back to the Early Cretaceous period, using two surface sections in Sulaymaniyah Governorate: Qaywan and Zewe.

Preliminary findings indicate that the Sarmord Formation represents a distinct geological unit from the Early Cretaceous period in the Kurdistan Region, differing from the Balambo Formation in facies and biogeographic content. The study also demonstrated that the analysis of nanocalcium fossils allowed for precise geological dating and correlation to the Early Cretaceous period.

We wish our students continued success and creativity in their academic and research endeavors, contributing to the exploration of the country’s resources and the study of their exploitation and utilization.
