Workshop Discusses the Future of Oil Amid Energy Transitions

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, with the follow-up of the Head of the Department of New and Renewable Energy, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Munir Suhail, the Department of New and Renewable Energy organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Future of Oil in Light of Energy Transitions” on the morning of Monday, February 2, 2026, as part of the department’s Continuing Education activities.
The workshop addressed the profound transformations taking place in the global energy sector amid growing calls to reduce carbon emissions and expand the use of renewable energy sources. It highlighted the realistic role of oil within these transitions, away from approaches that advocate its exclusion or immediate replacement.
The workshop explained that renewable energy sources represent a fundamental pillar for building a cleaner energy future. However, they still face challenges related to intermittency and lower energy density, making them unable to ensure energy security on their own. Consequently, the concept of energy integration has emerged, emphasizing the combination of oil and renewable energy within hybrid systems that reduce emissions while maintaining a stable energy supply.
The workshop also shed light on the evolving role of oil, from being primarily a fuel for combustion to becoming a strategic resource used in advanced industries and modern technologies. In addition, it emphasized the importance of innovation, improving energy efficiency, and implementing emission-reduction technologies in shaping a more sustainable energy future.
The workshop concluded that a successful energy transition is not based on eliminating oil but rather on redefining its role within a balanced energy mix that combines environmental sustainability, energy security, and continuous economic development.
The workshop was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Lubna Abdul Aziz Saleh, in the presence of a distinguished group of university professors and energy specialists from both inside and outside the University of Mosul.
At the conclusion of the event, the organizers expressed their wishes for continued success for all participants and for sustained scientific contributions that serve society and strengthen the university’s research mission.
