Department of Chemistry Discusses Master’s Thesis on Binuclear Schiff Base Complexes

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a Master’s thesis entitled:

“Binuclear Schiff Base Complexes Derived from 1,8-Diaminonaphthalene: Synthesis, Characterization, and Theoretical Study”

on Monday, February 9, 2026.

The thesis was presented by Jinar Ahmed Hussein from the Department of Chemistry. The study focused on the synthesis of a series of novel tetradentate Schiff base ligands derived through condensation reactions of the primary amine compound 1,8-diaminonaphthalene with suitable aldehydes or ketones under carefully controlled reaction conditions.

The research also included the preparation of binuclear metal complexes of these ligands with selected metal ions, followed by comprehensive characterization using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques. In addition, a theoretical investigation was conducted employing the Molecular Docking technique.

The study further evaluated the biological activity of several synthesized ligands and their complexes against breast cancer and colon cancer, as well as their antioxidant activity using the DPPH assay, highlighting their potential for future medical and environmental applications.

This thesis aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through the investigation of biologically active compounds with potential medical applications, Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by promoting scientific research and innovation in coordination chemistry and theoretical studies, and Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the development of potentially applicable chemical compounds using well-designed synthetic approaches.

The examination committee consisted of:

  • Assistant Professor Dr. Abdulghani Mohammed Al-Dhahir – Chairperson
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud Hussein Younis – Member
  • Lecturer Dr. Hiba Farouq Mohammed Amin Yahya – Member
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Khansaa Shaker Nimatullah Mohammed – Member and Supervisor
  • Professor Dr. Ammar Abdul Sattar Ibrahim Yahya – Member and Supervisor

At the conclusion of the defense, and on behalf of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Dr. Firas Ahmed Thanoon, presented a letter of appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Abdulghani Mohammed Al-Dhahir from Al-Noor University, in recognition of his valuable participation in the examination committee and his constructive academic remarks that contributed to enriching the discussion and enhancing the scientific quality of the thesis.

We extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes to our students for continued success and achievement, and for further progress and excellence in their academic and professional careers.
