College of Science Discusses a Master’s Thesis on the Evaluation of Physiological and Biochemical Parameters in Thyroid Cancer

The Department of Biology at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a Master’s thesis on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, entitled:

“Evaluation of Some Physiological and Biochemical Parameters as Risk Factors in Thyroid Cancer.”

The thesis, presented by Hanan Aziz Nayif Ali, investigated several physiological and biochemical parameters as potential risk factors associated with thyroid cancer. The study included the assessment of thyroid hormone levels, sex hormones, and Selenium-Binding Protein 1 (SELENBP1), in addition to examining certain risk factors such as age, sex, and body mass index (BMI).

The research also involved molecular analysis and the registration of a novel genetic variant of the SELENBP1 gene in the NCBI database for the first time within the Iraqi population, under the accession number:

GenBank: PX246670.1

The examination committee was chaired by:

Prof. Mahmoud Ismail Mohammed Hassan

with membership of:

  • Prof. Muntaha Mahmoud Dawood Dhannoon
  • Assist. Prof. Najah Subhi Nayif Khattab

and supervised by:

  • Lecturer Dr. Abeer Ali Kadhim Mohammed

This thesis aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, through contributing to the understanding of biological risk factors associated with thyroid cancer and supporting early diagnosis.
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through the application of modern molecular technologies and the registration of genetic data in international scientific databases.

At the conclusion of the defense, the committee commended the scientific quality of the thesis and highlighted its research and practical significance in supporting medical and health-related studies.
