Scientific Workshop at the University of Mosul Explores Geomagnetic Storms and Their Impact on Navigation Systems

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Prof. Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, and the follow-up of the Head of the Department of Geology and Petroleum, Assist. Prof. Dr. Omar Khallouk Mohammed Sajid, the Department of Geology and Petroleum organized a scientific workshop as part of its Continuing Education activities from Sunday, 21 June to Thursday, 25 June 2026, entitled:

“Geomagnetic Storms: Challenges to Navigation and Aviation Systems in the Era of Sustainability.”

The workshop introduced geomagnetic storms as temporary disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field resulting from the interaction between solar wind, charged particles, and the Earth’s magnetosphere. When these particles reach the Earth, they can affect electronic systems, communication networks, and satellites.

The workshop highlighted the rapid global advancement of satellite-based air, maritime, and land navigation systems, as well as other modern electronic technologies. As dependence on these technologies continues to increase, geomagnetic storms have emerged as a significant challenge to the continuity of navigation services and aviation safety. The speakers emphasized that understanding the effects of these storms is essential in the era of sustainability to support the development of intelligent and resilient transportation systems capable of withstanding both natural and technological hazards.

The workshop concluded that although geomagnetic storms are not cyberattacks, they may produce consequences similar to large-scale cyber incidents by disrupting critical digital infrastructure.

The workshop was delivered by Lect. Dr. Rana Abdulilah Mahmoud, Assist. Prof. Dr. Saddam Issa Mustafa, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Abdulhaq Khamees, in the presence of the Head of the Department, faculty members, and a number of specialists and individuals interested in geological sciences.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the organizers expressed their best wishes for the continued success of all participants and reaffirmed the importance of sustaining scientific activities that serve the community and strengthen scientific research at the University.
