Master thesis discusses a sedimentary study of sandstone rocks in the engana formation east of Mosul

On Monday, July 27, 2026, the Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled ” sedimentary study of sandstone rocks in the engana formation from selected detectors east of the city of Mosul, northern Iraq”, presented by master’s student Amir Mohammed Musab Ahmed. The discussion was attended by the head of the Department of Earth and petroleum Sciences, assistant professor Dr. Omar khalouk Mohammed Sajid, along with a number of department teachers and graduate students. The thesis aimed to study the sedimentary characteristics of sandstone rocks in the engana formation by conducting volumetric and mineralogical analysis, including petrographic study and heavy metal analysis, in order to determine the depositional environment and the source area, and to indicate the impact of tectonic and weathering processes in the formation of these rocks. The study included field work that included collecting samples from selected detectors east of Mosul, conducting volumetric and petrographic analyses and a study of heavy metals. The results showed that the rocks of the engana formation represent immature deposits derived from tectonically active sources, with the predominance of carbonate rock pieces among the heavy metals, and the study also showed that the low proportion of ultra-stable metals (ZTR) indicates a short distance of sediment transport and proximity to the source area. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Rafi Ibrahim Abdullah Al-Hamidi, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Salem Hamed Hussein and assistant professor Dr. Safwan Fathi Hamid, while assistant professor Dr. Falah Abdul Mohammed Azzawi supervised the thesis and participated as a member of the discussion Committee.
