Master thesis discusses the molecular diagnosis of bacteremia-causing bacteria in adults and finding their relationship with liver function

On Monday, July 27, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at Mosul University discussed the master thesis entitled ” molecular diagnosis of bacteria causing bacteremia in adults and finding their relationship with liver function ” presented by master student Iman said Musa fares. The discussion was attended by a number of teachers of the Department of life sciences and graduate students. The aim of the study was to isolate and diagnose bacteria causing bacteremia in adults using culture tests and molecular techniques based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, and to study their relationship with liver function by evaluating a number of biochemical indicators, as well as identifying the dominant bacterial species, testing their sensitivity to antibiotics, analyzing their fatty acid content, and detecting iron carrier genes (Siderophores) using Multiplex PCR technology. The results of the study showed the diagnosis of a number of bacterial species causing bacteremia, most notably Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella africana and lescherichia fergussonii, along with other bacterial species. The study also documented the diagnosis of Klebsiella africana bacteria for the first time globally from cases of bacteremia, as well as proving a significant relationship between the incidence of bacteremia and the rise of some indicators of liver function. The results also showed a variation in the patterns of antibiotic resistance, differences in the content of fatty acids and the susceptibility of isolates to the use of some amino acids, in addition to the detection of a number of iron carrier genes associated with virulence factors, contributing to the understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of these bacteria and the development of diagnostic and treatment methods. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Ryan Mazen Faisal Saeed, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Aseel Abdel Moneim Hussein Mohammed and teacher Dr. Sahar Salem Boutros Al-naqar, while Professor Dr. Ghada Abdul Razzaq Mohammed Ibrahim supervised the thesis and participated as a member of the discussion Committee. At the end of the discussion, the committee praised the scientific level of the thesis, stressing the importance of its results in the fields of microbiology and molecular diagnostics, and its role in enhancing the understanding of bacteria causing bacteremia and its relationship with liver function, thus contributing to support research efforts and the development of diagnostic and treatment methods.
