On Monday, August 10, 2026, the physics department at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled ” modeling the effect of the solar wind on the concentrations of gases of the upper atmosphere of the Earth using satellite data ” by student Maida Thamer Abdul Ghafoor, part of which was attended by the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim and a number of teachers and graduate students in the Department. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between the solar wind parameters and the total density of the thermosphere at an altitude of 400 km, evaluate the performance of the nrlmsize-20 and JB2008 models by comparing them with the data of the GRACE and Swarm satellites, as well as to study the response of neutral gas concentrations during three strong solar storms and compare their behavior in the calm, storm and recovery phases. The study was based on a two-part methodology; the first included a long-term study (1996-2019) of the total density of the thermosphere and analyzed its relationship with five main parameters of the solar wind, while the second part focused on the short-term response to the components of the thermosphere by calculating the concentrations of the main neutral gases (O, O2, N, N2, H, Ar) and interpreting the effect of solar activity in its composition. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Jassim Mohammed Rajab, with the membership of : assistant professor Dr. Samir Mahmoud Ahmed, teacher Dr. Huda Mohammed Munir, and under the supervision and membership of assistant professor Dr. Emad Ahmed Hussein and assistant professor Yusra Malallah Abdullah. At the end of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Jassim Mohammed Rajab from the Faculty of science / Mustansiriya University, in appreciation of his efforts and for taking the trouble to travel and chairing the discussion Committee.
