Doctoral dissertation discusses the detection of determinants of antibiotic resistance and the accuracy of diagnosis using Next-Generation Sequencing in chronic bacterial prostatitis

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, discussed the tagged doctoral thesis: “Detection of Antibiotic Resistance Determinants and the Diagnosis Accuracy of Next Generation Sequencing in Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis” PhD student Ahmed Mohamed Suleiman from the branch of microbiology. The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of a set of modern diagnostic tools for the detection of chronic bacterial prostatitis, using conventional transplantation, Vitek 2 diagnostics, multiple polymerase assay of the 16S rRNA gene, sequence determination by the Sanger method, and comprehensive genomic sequencing (Shotgun metagenomics), to determine the diversity of the microbiome, resistance genes and virulence of the samples under study. This study is the first of its kind in Iraq to apply this integrated diagnostic path from conventional transplantation to a comprehensive genomic analysis of the etiology of this disease. The study showed the limitations of traditional local transplantation in hospitals; only 21% of cases were detected, leaving out numerous anaerobic and latent pathogens, while molecular techniques based on 16S rRNA raised the detection rate to 79.8% (with a diagnostic gap of 74.5%), with the detection of bacterial species recorded for the first time locally in their ability to cause disease. The tests also revealed a very high percentage of resistance to antibiotics (59.6%), and that all the tested isolates were multi-resistant. At an advanced stage, selected samples were subjected to the technique of comprehensive genomic sequencing (Shotgun metagenomics), which revealed more diverse and complex bacterial communities, and cutibacterium acnes bacteria associated with prostate cancer in the scientific literature were detected for the first time in Iraqi samples. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Israa Ghanem Hazem Mohammed, and the membership of: assistant professor Dr. Talal Sabhan Saleh Khader, assistant professor Dr. Khansa Muhammad Yunus Fathi, assistant professor Dr. Muhammad Taha Mahmoud Khader, assistant professor Dr. blind hossamdin Abdullah (University of Duhok) and under the supervision and membership of Professor Dr. Ryan Mazen Faisal said. At the end of the discussion, the dean of the College, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to assistant professor Dr. bland Hossam al-Din Abdullah from the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Duhok, in appreciation of his efforts in discussing the student.
