Seminar on the lithostratigraphy and biogeography of the formation of the opening in the area of the Mosul Dam

As part of the activities of the seminars for graduate students, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, PhD student Inas Sami Hasib from the Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of Science presented a seminar on her dissertation tagged “rock stratigraphy and life stratigraphy for the formation of the hole in the Mosul Dam area”, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Maha Abdul Hamid Mustafa al-Hassoun and assistant professor Dr. Falah Abdul Mohammed Al-Amari, and in the presence of a number of department teachers and graduate students. The seminar dealt with the study of the stratigraphic sequence of the formation of the opening in the Mosul Dam area, including limestone, Marl, Marl limestone, gypsum and anhydrite, as well as the changes to which these rocks are exposed, including weathering, discoloration and fragility when exposed to water. The study also focused on determining the stratigraphic age of the hole formation based on the types of foraminifera, as the studied models showed the abundance of benthic foraminifera and the lack of floating foraminifera, which contributes to determining the geological age of the formation within the Middle Miocene (Langhian–Serravallian). These seminars come within the framework of enhancing the scientific research skills of graduate students, and providing an opportunity to present and discuss the results of their research and Exchange scientific experiences with the teachers of the Department. Our wishes to the doctoral student and to all graduate students for success, excellence and scientific brilliance.
