Scientific Breakthrough from Mosul: New Thyme Varieties Registered in the Global Gene Bank (NCBI)

In a remarkable scientific achievement that adds to the growing record of excellence at the College of Science – University of Mosul, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rana Tariq Yahya from the Department of Medical Physics, in collaboration with Master’s student Jumana Abduljabbar Ahmed from the Department of Biological Sciences, has successfully registered four new varieties of the thyme plant (Thymus caespititius) in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the global gene bank network.

These newly identified varieties have been officially listed in the international database under the following accession numbers:
🔹 PV454434
🔹 PV454435
🔹 PV454436
🔹 PV454437

This milestone is the result of meticulous experiments conducted on tissue cultures of the thyme plant, which were exposed to a magnetic field in order to induce molecular changes in the gene responsible for producing thymol—a key bioactive compound known for its medicinal and aromatic properties.

This scientific advancement marks a qualitative step toward developing plant varieties with enhanced traits, greater productivity, and improved therapeutic potential. It also opens new horizons in genetic engineering and modern biotechnologies for medicinal plants.

The College of Science proudly celebrates this outstanding success, commending the exceptional research efforts of its faculty and students. The college reaffirms its commitment to fostering innovation, supporting scientific excellence, and contributing knowledge that aligns with global advancements.
