Master’s Thesis Defense – Department of Biology, College of Science, University of Mosul

The Department of Biology, College of Science, University of Mosul, held the defense of the master’s thesis entitled:

“Immunological and Molecular Detection of Torque Teno Virus among Blood Donors in Mosul City / Iraq”

presented by Noor Sabah Anwar Jassim from the Microbiology Branch, on Monday, September 8, 2025.

The defense was attended by Asst. Prof. Dr. Rayan Mazen Faisal, Scientific Assistant, Prof. Dr. Amjad Abdulhadi, Head of Department, several faculty members, and graduate students.

The study focused on detecting the prevalence of the single-stranded DNA Torque Teno Virus (TTV) among blood donors using advanced molecular and immunological techniques. It also evaluated immune cytokine patterns, measuring tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels among the donors. Positive virus isolates underwent genetic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, and certain strains were registered in the GenBank database.

The objectives of the study included immunological and molecular diagnosis of TTV, assessment of the immune response through cytokine measurement, and comparison of detected viral strains with global sequences in the NCBI database.

The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Abdul Jabbar Hussein, with members Prof. Dr. Aws Ibrahim Suleiman and Asst. Prof. Dr. Enas Abdulmonem Hussein, supervised and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim and Asst. Prof. Dr. Anmar Ahmed Dawood Suleiman.

This research aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, by enhancing early virus detection and ensuring the health and safety of blood donors and the community.

  • Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, through the application of advanced molecular and immunological techniques for virus analysis and comparison with global strains.

We extend our best wishes to our students for continued success and excellence in their academic and research endeavors.
