Workshop on the role of the human microbiome in the digestive system and immunity

The Department of Biology Sciences held a scientific workshop entitled ” The role of the human microbiome in the digestive system and immunity ” on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 in the Hall of Dr. Mahmoud Haj Qasim, in the presence of a number of college teachers and students.
The workshop included four main scientific topics, as Assistant Prof. In the first section, Hanan Sami Nouri gave a presentation on the concept of the microbiome and its relationship to intestinal and immune health, its role in digestion and protecting the body from harmful bacteria, and its impact on the psychological state.
In the second section, Assistant Prof. Dr. Angham Jabbar Alwan types of microbiome, its basic components and factors influencing its formation such as heredity, diet, mode of birth and age.
The third part was presented by Assistant Prof. Najla Abdullah Fathi, she touched upon the analysis of the microbiome to detect bacterial imbalances associated with diseases such as obesity, diabetes and intestinal diseases, with a statement of its medical and research applications.
While L. Dr. Mohamed Abdelghani Mohamed reviewed methods of microbiome detection, including traditional, immunological and molecular methods and modern sequencing techniques such as 16S rRNA and shotgun metagenomics that allow accurate characterization of bacterial communities.
The workshop concluded with recommendations that stressed the importance of promoting microbiome health through high-fiber nutrition, the use of Prebiotics, reducing the excess of antibiotics, and physical activity.
