Four new fungal strains have been registered in the global gene bank as part of the College of Science’s research.

In a significant scientific achievement that adds to the College of Science’s record of academic successes, Professor Dr. Faten Nouri Mulla Abdul, a college member in the Department of Biology Sciences, along with doctoral student Shifa Tayyar Jaafar, achieved a major scientific milestone by registering four new fungal strains for the first time globally at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), as part of the requirements for her doctoral dissertation.

The recorded strains included one strain belonging to the Ascomycota fungi and three strains belonging to the Basidiomycota fungi, as follows:

  1. Diaporthe liquidambaris (PQ498361.1)
  2. Candolleomyces candolleanus (PQ507916.1)
  3. Candolleomyces candolleanus (PQ516842.1)
  4. Lentinula edodes (PQ508367.1)

This is the first record of its kind globally for these strains in the GenBank database. They were isolated from various farms and areas in Mosul during a field survey of macrofungi (ascomycota and basidiomycota), given the significant environmental, nutritional, and medical importance of these fungi.

On another note, the College of Science, represented by its Dean, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Al-Tai, extends its sincerest congratulations and best wishes to the two researchers in recognition of this outstanding scientific achievement, wishing them continued progress, success, and scientific advancement.
