Faculty Member from the College of Science Chairs Master’s Thesis Defense Committee at the University of Duhok

As part of ongoing academic cooperation and the exchange of scientific expertise between universities, Professor Dr. Nabil Subhi Othman, a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, chaired the examination committee for a Master’s thesis defense at the College of Science, University of Duhok, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.

The thesis was entitled:

“Development of MOF-PET Based Thin Films for Trace Acenaphthene Analysis and Cr(VI) Removal in Environmental Water Samples”

and was submitted by Hayat Asaad Salih under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Barween Hashim Salim.

The study focused on the development and evaluation of two innovative thin-film materials, NH₂-MIL-101(Fe)/PET and MIL-53(Fe)/PET, utilizing recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymers as a flexible matrix for environmental remediation applications.

The research was divided into two main parts. The first involved the preparation of the composite material for the analysis of acenaphthene in aqueous solutions using the micro solid-phase extraction (μSPE) technique. The second part focused on the fabrication and application of the material for the removal of toxic hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] ions from water samples.

The findings demonstrated the high efficiency of the synthesized materials in environmental applications and pollutant analysis, representing a significant contribution to the fields of materials chemistry and sustainable water treatment technologies.

The College of Science extends its best wishes to all its faculty members for continued success and excellence in their academic and scientific endeavors.
